Description:

The objective of the assessment/study was to develop and evaluate multiple options for re-developing the existing Staff House kitchen/dining facilities and make recommendations for advancing the project. In general, the options had to consider expansion to the existing building, as well as working within the existing buildings’ footprint (i.e. no building expansion), and incorporate concept drawings, kitchen equipment lists and construction cost estimates.
The assessment report ultimately led to the preparation of a full design drawing and specification package for the preferred option selected by Nalcor.

Project Role:

Maderra Engineering completed the building assessment of the existing mechanical and electrical equipment, as well as the new design to suit the space layout changes and upgrades.

Challenges:

The main challenge of this project was generating an option to meet the clients’ budget constraints, while also providing a space that could accommodate a significant increase in occupant capacity (from 76 persons to 160 persons). The project team produced a total of six (6) options for the client to evaluate, and each option included a layout drawing and construction cost estimate. Due to the stringent budget requirements the selected option did not include any building expansion, only a re-allocation of the existing space.

The project included the assessment and evaluation of the maintenance garage, carpentry shop, and training center located at the Bay d’Espoir Generating Station. The condition assessment was used to document the existing conditions of the buildings, as well as outline potential upgrading and/or replacement costs so as to guide future decisions by Nalcor in terms of retention, replacement, or some combination thereof.

Project Role:

Maderra Engineering completed the mechanical and electrical building assessment.

Challenges:

The buildings were approximately forty (40) years old and there were several assets in need of significant upgrading and/or replacement due to their current physical condition and for aesthetic, operational and functional reasons, as well as to meet present day codes. The main challenge was determining what building equipment could be salvaged and re-purposed for future building use.

This project involved assessments of existing battery banks and associated chargers located at seventeen remote substations located throughout the province.

Responsibilities:

- visiting each site, performing assessments of existing systems and reporting findings to Nalcor,
- developing work packages for the replacement of the defective battery banks and chargers,
- providing assistance in the development of technical specifications for two public tenders covering the replacement of the defective battery banks and chargers and
- providing on-site and/or remote support for the duration of the projects.

Challenges:

Some obstacles Maderra Engineering had to overcome during the course of the work were the number of work sites involved and their remote locations.
These factors played out at the initial stage of the project and later again during mobilization and construction stages.
The logistics involved in the disposal of the obsolete batteries and chargers and the delivery of the replacement units often required some innovative thinking at the development of the work package stages.

Description:

This project involved the assessment of the former hydro generating station located at Twin Falls, Labrador. This facility was constructed just before the Churchill Falls development began as a test facility to determine if the hydro generating model was feasible and later served as a source of power for the construction of the Churchill Falls project and the development of the Wabush/Labrador City area. The scope of the project was to assess the architectural, mechanical and electrical components of this facility, complete a decommissioning study and to determine the feasibility of offering the said equipment for sale to the international market.

Responsibilities:

Visiting the site, performing assessments of existing structures, systems and equipment.
Determining the logistics of dismantling the removing any equipment and/or material deemed suitable for re-sale and reuse.
Producing a formal report outlining the findings.

Challenges:

The existing building had hazardous materials, therefore personnel required Hazmat training and orientation. The evaluation of the inside of the structure was performed while wearing relevant Hazmat protective clothing.

Maderra completed a preliminary review of the scope, gathered all equipment data of the scaffold system to be used, reviewed the scope of work including anticipated loading, modifications and material handling methods, conducted an onsite pre-design scaffold site survey and identified gaps through meetings with Nexans and contractors. Additionally, Maderra provided advice regarding site investigation requirements that was necessary for design inputs, preliminary drawings for the Nexans and the contractor to comment on. Maderra issued to use drawings for erection and completed an additional site visit for engineering review prior to commencement of use by other trades to confirm general compliance to engineering documents.

Maderra was contracted by RCM Modulaire to supply mechanical and electrical engineering services for the HJ O'Connell’s Cafeteria in Labrador City. Maderra completed electrical and HVAC mechanical design in accordance with relevant codes, which included an underground service entrance, lighting, heating, power distribution, life safety systems and the necessary ventilation/fire suppression system. The plumbing design was completed by RCM and reviewed by Maderra in accordance with the appropriate codes and standards. Maderra produced all documentation including drawings to satisfy NL Government requirements for the purposes of construction and occupancy.

In 2014, Maderra completed a HSE assessment of setting up a processing facility in Paradise, NL centered on the proprietary Tenaris dopeless technology. The assessment outlined the mechanical and electrical system upgrades required to ensure the installed system meets all applicable codes and standards for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Project Overview

ExxonMobil and partners are developing the Hebron Field with a concrete gravity based structure (GBS) production platform. This platform and the topsides process facilities will be built and integrated at the Bull Arm Construction Site in Newfoundland & Labrador.

As part of ongoing site remediation for the Bull Arm site, the GBS engineering and construction contractor, Kiewit-Kvaerner Contractors, awarded a sub contract to Maderra Engineering to carry out a detailed Arc Flash Study for the Dry Dock/GBS site infrastructure. Arc Flash is a potential electrical hazard present when working on live equipment, and is the result of a rapid release of energy due to an arcing fault.

This study involved documenting the existing electrical systems for nine of the buildings at the Bull Arm site, and then modelling each system in industry recognized power system analysis software, ETAP. An analysis on the electrical systems was conducted to identify any potential arc flash hazards as per IEEE 1584 standard.

The scope of work included a comparison of the in-service condition of all batteries and their associated chargers (18 different Manufacturers/Ratings) to ensure that they are configured as per Manufacturer’s recommendations, and suitable for duty, an investigation of battery room environmental conditions (14 spaces), and its effects on battery charger capabilities and battery life, a determination if there are upgrades available to existing charger systems that could extend battery life, and a review of maintenance records to ensure battery chargers are adequately maintained and if necessary provide updates to existing preventative maintenance routines.

Feed streams in the model were modified to determine operating conditions for three forecasted production cases which were used to revise the existing process datasheets and to develop Heat and Material Balances.

The equipment will be placed directly on the excavated drill center (EDC) base and were designed to withstand in-place/operation loads, wave induced current loads, and seismic loads. This follow-on study to phase I was modeled to include a more detailed model of the subsea equipment and the 3D model of an iceberg. The objective of this study is to evaluate the response of the specific subsea well system from an impact with an iceberg. As with phase I, the analysis included identifying the expected mechanical or structural failures, their sequence, the expected weakest point of failure, impairment of mechanical or hydraulic systems which may affect operation of downhole equipment, and any other failure that could potentially cause a loss of containment. In addition, the results were evaluated to identify mitigation measures that could be implemented to any part of the subsea well system.

To ensure both the pressure containing piping kit and the structural steel frame, foundation, were designed to withstand in-place/operation loads, wave induced current loads, iceberg snag load, and seismic loads. Ceasar piping analysis software and STAAD PRO/STAAD Offshore software were used for the analysis and design.
